This was a pain when adding separate time of day values for post processing. A "quick" and fast way to tell the time in a game is to track the position of the sun/moon model.

Yeah, can confirm the sun and moon goes up and down on the same 90 degree angle
Time has a min/max speed too, you can't get more than 24 hours in about a minute

it's on my list of things i want to do in the farther future - it breaks the immersion a little bit if you pay attention... and if i am not mistaken, the shadows also "jump" each minute, when they update - at least that is what i noticed.
