Nice words, I know what a depth buffer is, but never did shadow maps or found out how dynamic shadows work.

Shadow map is rendered with a pass by rendering depth into texture using light source as a camera. Then you render the scene normally having that texture and find if a certain pixel is shadowed or not based on that texture using a few matrix transforms
