The phasing system is an extremely trivial implementation.
In object class there is a method called CanSeeObject, which implements the bitmask.
This can be modified easily to create unique phases for example. However bear in mind this is called constantly against every unit in range, rather than just the units in your phase. Instanced maps are more performant.
