the client knows about those as "player entities" that it receives through either the world itself or party updates / who or whatever

On retail there are units that can be seen across half of the map. But I guess they are not supported on private servers.

For example that giant Fel Reaver in Hellfire Peninsula

you can tell the player about creatures a million miles away as well, but you'll need to write it specifically

world bosses in MOP also have unlimited range, you can see if they are spawned by /target them.

in both tc and ac, there are different 'classes' of units that get different visibility ranges, and you can configure those to be about as high as you want or add your own categories, only thing you can't practically do is make every player aware of every unit in a normal sized map

These are supported on private servers. You can override the view distance in the DB.
