Honestly, even the pings I can understand. It's a built in feature, and anyone can turn it off if it bothers them. That said, the entitlement and passive aggression is the core of the problem.

In general it even makes sense to ping if you're picking up on an earlier conversation with someone, the person might not be around and will see it when they are. It's a non-issue, personally.

pinging is fine as long as it isn't excessive, turning it off means people that do need to reach others has less opportunity to do so

I completely agree, some people will ping at the beginning of every single message, even in an ongoing one-to-one conversation, that is just crazy
