you typically use hex for mask values because it makes it very easy to make out values that only refer to a single flag. Anything that starts with 1/2/4/8 followed by 0 or more 0s is just one bit set, anything else is a compound mask

0x000001 is the same as 0x1 fyi, it's just a standard and easier to read to have as many digits for all values
