If someone is "malicious" they could easily patch their own client or simply download the new client and discard the patch, that won't enforce anything

Modifying client data should at best help with going where you should not which if you do can solid anticheat catch imidietly since going where navmesh says you should not is easy to detect

My point was primarily to say, if someone wants to not use your patch, they can if they really want to.
If you simply want to alert the user that their patch is outdated, then a launcher is what you should make your users go through.
