from my memory of wow, loot on blizz's end is very strange...as there's multiple layers of loot sources, and when you kill a mob, it compiles rolls from all of the different sources...like there's creature family loot, level based loot, zone based loot, meta-zone based loot, global loot, etc

and so when you're looking at a flat loot table, you're not getting remotely the whole picture

for instance, if I remember correctly, recipes are like a special form of meta-loot that always has a chance of dropping within specific level ranges from any mob that spawns in a zone in those level ranges

instances if I remember correctly have their own meta loot tables for rare loot that can drop from any creature in that instance, in addition to loot that only drops from specific creatures
