I've always viewed it as a way for friends to relive old glories in a code that was built with heart by people that care about it, instead of the machinations of a corporate machine.

At the end of the day we are developing for fun, try to educate further, experiment with some stuff etc. All of that is done by implementing stuff of the game we all love
