At Blizzard it's like this, if they release a new patch and your client version doesn't match the server, then you can't connect to the server until you've downloaded the most important data from the server, i.e. in the official client it says "playable" he then loads the rest when you're online, but the woltk version has no bnet luncher believe it didn't exist back then.

The question is how you can do something like that with your own custom patches to avoid the crashes mentioned, so the player needs the patches first before this player can play on my server.

Change build in tc Auth database AND provide a wow.exe to all your players that has this exact build number.
