I just recently started research on setting up a private WoW server for myself and a few others. I may be getting my wires crossed on a few things between Azerothcore and Trinitycore, so please forgive my ignorance. If I were to setup a private WotLK server with TrinityCore, will there be functionality in the future to migrate the server to Cataclysm as the TrinityCore team makes updates based on Cata Classic being around to help with TC progress? Or would it make more sense to start the Cataclysm server right of the bat?

Also, maybe I am misunderstanding the TC Cata fork, but is there currently a Cata Fork that is based on "Classic" already or only one based on the old original client? Just trying to figure out if it even makes since to make a Cataclysm server at this point, or if this is something I should come back to. Thank you!

there will be cata classic yes but dont expect something playable soon

Cataclysm Classic is not supported as of right now and won't be for a long time given the malfunctioning and incomplete state of the current live client. Depending on if Cataclysm Classic will turn out somewhat decent or not at the end of its content lifecycle it may get canceled alltogether. As for migrating DB data - it is possible, but there won't be a native functionality for that. This will require manual labor from your end.
