i love sql and modding/playing wow, but i absolutely hate the setup process of a server. it needs to be simplified as much as possible to get new people interested in a dying game/dying hobby/dying genre.

is there a reason long-term should avoid docker?

For this? No. In general though, you shouldn't use docker for production environments

couldn't agree with ya more, the trouble with docker is that it automates so much away that when an issue occurs, the end user usually has no idea how to fix it since they haven't really set any of it up. I deal with this a lot at my day job where engineers don't know how their applications work because it's been done for them

its the worst of both worlds. it doesnt automate enough because there's 10+ prerequisite steps, most not mentioned in the guide, and there's lots of messy steps using things the average person is not familiar with

but then it automates too much because if it breaks there's no way to know what's wrong with it.

like i've successfully compiled azerothcore and it says it's running right now, but with the default admin/admin account being deleted for some reason in a revision 10 months ago, i have no way to make accounts

If everyone who sets it up for the first time improves ONE line of the setup guide, we're past complaining it doesn't work in - let's say - 4 weeks.
