in fact, is the sql database even populated from dbc files or is it just a mountain of people putting in data from wowhead or what have you over the years?

dbcs dont hold all data most of the tables that are not ended with _dbc were manually populated over years

i just physically recoiled at the thought of that, holy shit. so in the event that drops are missing, it's a matter of going to the mangos wotlk-db and raising an issue or opening a PR with the relevant changes

well if something is "wrong" u first need to prove that its wrong and find how it should be right....on top of that some data are simply not possible to know

when u are talking loot good example is drop chance of all items...all items that are not 100% are guesses by ppl in past

it's not a matter of chance, assuming wowhead is an acceptable reference; there are 36 entries for an item id in `creature_loot_template` and 42 creatures listed as dropping it on wowhead, so i should just get the name and id for the missing creatures and put it in an issue, right?
