If it is a project to have fun with a few people, I don't think you will suffer many DDoS attacks. However, sometimes, it is better to be safe than sorry.

I rented contaboo, on occasion, to make a tutorial for the YouTube channel. But I never used it, to have an online server.

I know that emulator uses more RAM than normal, because it has a kind of cache, which speeds up loading, but it needs to have enough memory. As for the number of cores, I don't know the minimum or maximum amount required, based on the players.

Yea i have to put in my head that i have to spend 100 bucks a month to host a wow server, i ve seen so many wow servers that i honestly tought it was less expensive
