It seems like that type of install is module-dependent, no? I've got mod-playerbots installed and it works but there's no corresponding .conf file in my worldserver directory

The worldserver and authserver conf doesn't check for .dist anymore.
The module confs still read the .dist as default and overide the defaults with what is in the .conf.

Unless I missed the commit which changed that.

So best practice is, for each module, to copy the git-hosted .conf.dist file for each module into the worldserver directory and rename as .conf?

No need to fetch it from git. The dist is moved to your binary's conf folder when you compile.
Create a copy next to the .dist and remove the .dist from the copy.
Then modify the .conf only.

You're saying to create a copy next to the .dist in the /etc/modules folder and then it will get copied at compile-time?

Firstly, the orginal dist, which is required to run the worldserver is created when compileing. It is taken from your local source files.
No manual copying so far.
If you want to change the configuration, you copy the.dist file, remove the .dist from the copy. then change the .conf file.
Or create a new .conf file with just what you want to override.

I did assume were talking windows when i said next to the binaries. Seems like this is LInux.
