and I think whoami.akamai.net resolves to your ip, so its a way to keep your ip up-to-date without having to adjust the table constantly

i sapose saves you changing the information twice once on host and other on the server

You can use a domain name just fine for either or of the address fields, just keep in mind the dns resolution is done on the host and not the client
