I can try 22.04 later yes, though I remember trying that a while back and there was some other issue I don't recall right now. Might not even have been azerothcore related.

and yeah on MariaDB, right now I've reverted to a server snapshot before AC requirements install and I am trying again with MySQL

I am making progress. I dumped out the DB, switched it out for MySQL and reimported.

auth starts up now and tries to load/update the DB but its failing.

I'll post here just for interest what I'm getting but I have to go out now so no time to troubleshoot it. Probably something to do with the DB switch I did I imagine but will check back on it later.
