You need to compile with the same version you use, and have the libraries/dlls from the same version you use and compile with

You will have issues connecting to a database running on another system too. MySQL can't connect to MariaDB and vice-versa either - at least I can't use my linux mariadb for my windows mysql dev environment.

it should work with diff systems as long as you compile with the same version you have on the other system
