Frankly I wonder if it wouldn't be easier just to add a config option to switch between pre-wotlk and wotlk spell changes

oh but that only does the spells, what about the loot tables, id need new mobs for that wouldnt i?

you can just create new entries in the loot templates and update the lootid for the creatures to use the new loot table

whenever i try to open an MPQ with WDBXE i get an "unable to read file" exception

You don't open MPQs with WDBX, you open those with Ladik's MPQ Editor
