I just tested it to make sure and my server can ping it's own hostname but my gaming PCs can't so I updated the `address` field to that hostname and the clients cannot connect anymore. So yes, it has to be done even internally.

Certain routers (or bare dhcp/dns servers) can resolve the hostname but unless they can, you have to edit the hosts file. Luckily one of my networks do resolve the hostnames and one doesn't so I was able to switch and test this.
