Happy to running a vm on my home server a Ubuntu machine, I run it in a docker container but that doesn’t seem to be the issue.
My domain is provided by cloudflare and it simply seems to be that in my dns dashboard when I enable the proxies address so that it doesn’t leak my home ip it can’t connect but if I disable that it does connect.

Simplest way would be to setup a new a record that doesn’t use the proxy for my desired subdomain but not sure if that’s desired.

I think cloudflare proxies for DNS support only the http(s) protocol (and we are using raw tcp here). To hide your home IP - in a cloudflare DNS record, you need to remove the proxy part and use some other services (e.g. cloudflare spectrum), a load balancer, or setup a proxy server (e.g. with haproxy).
