But I think the biggest benefit of custom client application would be that you could freely share it and discuss its modifications.

There's been quite a few proof of concept projects where you wouldn't recognize wow but the client is talking to a wow server.

That is what I'm thinking too - the client is hardcoded to "you tell me thing levels up, I do the animation for it." It's not a huge distraction for stuff that loads in far away from you, but sometimes creatures spawn in quite close. Summons or revives are the big thing that they're noticable on.
