What we call wow nowadays started as a fun /bonus campaign for TFT if there was an actual game at that time im unsure (outside of wc3)

I always thought it was the original developers trying to make a game that was basically their dnd campaign set in the warcraft universe.

development started in 99, game was announced in 2001, then in 2003 the friends and family alpha went into testing and more closely resembled what wow would become

A quick a look at the wow diary, it seems if nomand never was canceled probably wow could have never existed (this in 99)
