I used Stone Harry's spell editor to change a bunch of spells. The changes work (after I put the new dbc files in my server files),
But the tooltips don't show the changes as I expected from the display inside of the software. I also put the custom patch in my wow folder. What is needed to make the game show the new spell information?

It's just a stat change on the spells nothing visual or otherwise significant

Did you try clearing client cache? It shouldn't matter, but if even that isn't working the patch isn't being loaded.

I didn't think about the cache, I'll try that thanks

Clearing the cache did not work, unfortunately.
Do I need to do anything in particular to have the game load the patch? I assumed I just dropped it in the games data folder

Properly naming the MPQ archive is enough to get the game to load one, and it can't be in use when you start WoW (i.e by having the archive open in MPQ editor) or it won't be loaded.

I simply went with patch-4.MPQ
If the spell editor showed me a specific tooltip, it's safe to assume that'd what should appear in game with the patch and dbc files in place?

I'll check the naming scheme for the patch to make sure it's .MPQ and looks similar to the other patches

Update - changing the name to a letter instead of a number worked. I don't know why.
It's now patch-S.MPQ
S for speed - all mount speeds increased

I use patch-5 to 9 before switching to letters
