so .... any suggestion for backups?

Currently running it on Debian under Hyper-V. Should I backup the whole VM? or database snapshots?

ingame progress is getting serious with a handful of people, so keeping it alive and backed up is becoming important

Im on Proxmox and i run my server in an LXC container.
I personally make backups of the whole machine, but it takes seconds on Proxmox with backup server.

I think on yours it will take significant longer to backup the whole machine. Test this, it can be that you have a full backup in seconds too.
In the case that it takes to long time it will be better you make only a db and file backup.
But you have to test what is better for you and your purposes.

Backup of your complete machine will not harm your online players, especially if you use zfs as filesystem and you are using snapshots. Lightning fast.

Mine is 36GB. XD
But i have a client on this machine to extract the maps manually. This makes the machine really big.
