I'm a C++ dev by profession, but hate it with a passion. Am I ultimately going to get the most access to the underlying systems coding c++ scripts for everything or is eluna/smart ai competitive for most things?

Looking over everything, it feels like I need a solid understanding of the underlying C++ to really understand the higher level abstractions being made by the others

C++ has the least restrictions, that's why it's used for boss scripts.
SAI is a good candidate for regular mobs. With an editor like <#536630256048799744> , people claim it's readable.
Eluna is only used for custom development.
Diving deep into cpp is only necessary, if you want to change a core mechanic. Being capable of C++ is always a plus when doing a script, it sometimes helps to understand what a method does instead of just using trial and error.

In the end everything is built on C++. So eluna and sai will have restrictions if something isnt implemented.
Personally I hate SAI and havent touched Eluna so wouldnt know. But many use eluna, so give it a shot.
But as I said they both rely on C++ and for it to be extended to the respective ways
