I'm not sure if they are as or more efficient when it comes to resources but even if they do use a little bit more than npcbots you have to consider the benefit of them over npcbots as a major factor. Strategies for dungeons and raids implemented, and more being added over time, means you don't have to micromanage every step they take. If it matters to you they are like having players on your server, they run around and level (if you want them to) and you can invite them on the spot and do quests, dungeons, battlegrounds etc with them. You can even make other characters on your account log in and use them as bots, including characters on different accounts if they're in your guild.

What are you trying to achieve here?
Npc bots require you to spawn them first to be able being used in the game.
For wandering, just enable the wander option.
