in `/home/mercedene/server/etc/` (where worldserver.conf.dist and authserver.conf.dist) you don't need to keep the .dist but doesn't hurt to get into the habit of having both so you don't make a mistake in the future.

so my follow up question is regarding the output of make install not specifying any .conf files and only .conf.dist files. Am I misunderstanding what this output log message is regarding? since obviously the server is using the changes I've made in the .conf files

It doesn't copy the configs into `.conf` (without .dist) because those are the ones you edit. It would overwrite your changes every time and you wouldn't want that.
